Organizations need to ensure they have the adequate technology for compliance, as new research has revealed that almost all firms are likely to be hit by a targeted sophisticated attack.
Researchers at security firm McAfee studied the logs of a sole operation conducted by a single actor or group over a period of five years and were surprised by what they found.
More than 70 companies, governments and non-profit organizations across 14 countries and more than 30 industry types were targeted in the attack.
Dmitri Alperovitch, vice-president of threat research at McAfee, said that the diversity of this sole operation suggested that "virtually everyone" will be hit by malware.
"I am convinced that every company in every conceivable industry with significant size and valuable intellectual property and trade secrets has been compromised, or will be shortly, with the great majority of the victims rarely discovering the intrusion or its impact," he said.
Writing for Network World magazine, the editor of the publication, Ellen Messmer, said it is essential that businesses prepare against a data breach, perhaps by investing in technology for compliance.
