Organizations looking to improve their data management procedures should ensure that they are aware where any business information is going to be stored.

According to a report on the Messaging Architects website, any company who is thinking about outsourcing their database storage facilities needs to be aware of the potential legal pitfalls.

Furthermore, knowing which departments produce the most data is also beneficial to businesses who are looking to implement new products or management strategies, the report said.

"It's difficult to fully secure data unless IT staff knows where it is actually stored and the data management laws of the nation or state is understood," the article explained.

Earlier this year, research from independent firm Gartner suggested that businesses are looking to up their spending on data management tools as a result of the surplus of information which they are now required to store on their systems.

Gartner added that worldwide IT spending is forecast to reach $2.4 trillion in 2011.
