Canada prepares for magazine mailing list price hike

Mailing rates for magazines in Canada will rise by three per cent next year, it has been revealed.

According to the Masthead Online, Canada Post (CP) has informed Magazines Canada of the proposed move, leading to complaints from the publisher.

Mark Jamison, MC chief executive, told CP that while the group understands rate increases are necessary in the difficult economic climate, a three per cent hike is excessive, the news provider writes.

"A three per cent increase is well beyond inflation and totally out of step with pricing of other products and services to the magazine sector in the current economy," he commented.

Research carried out by Rogers Publishing indicates postage costs for magazines have increased by 38 per cent since 2002.

Earlier this week, Research and Markets' US Directory and Mailing List Publishers report indicated the directory and mailing list publishing industry in the US accounts for around 1,100 companies with a combined annual revenue of about $20 billion.
