Many firms are changing their data management processes to take advantage of the functionality of Gmail, it has been revealed.
According to search engine marketing firm QueryClick, Google's email system has become so popular that just five years after launch it is set to usurp Microsoft Outlook as the market leader for business email.
Research from analysts at Gartner suggests that the cloud-based Gmail is now a "viable alternative" to Outlook.
QueryClick's managing director Christopher Liversidge says the performance of Gmail will make competition in this important market sector even tougher.
"It's true that businesses are becoming more reliant on emails as a method of communication, and they will obviously need an excellent email system to help them do that," he added.
According to IT security specialist Symantec, the sheer volume of emails now passing through companies puts a significant strain on data management, and highlights the benefits of an effective archiving system.
