Managers 'in the dark' over IT security

A large number of firms are operating with IT systems that are not nearly as secure as they think, according to new research.

The study by Gabriel Consulting Group on behalf of IT security experts at McAfee gauged the opinions of 147 data center managers at companies of varying size.

Of those polled, 60 per cent said that management believes data security to be more effective than it actually is.

Furthermore, only 22 per cent of firms are said to be fully aware of how well they are really prepared to deal with a security breach.

Dan Olds, principal analyst at Gabriel Consulting Group, said that the results of this survey should cause alarm among those charged with looking after a firm's data management.

"Data center management needs to be frank and honest when discussing the strengths and weaknesses of their security mechanisms. Obviously, it's far better to discuss potential security issues before they’re exposed by a breach," he continued.
