Ecommerce outlets are becoming increasingly popular with shoppers in the US, MasterCard has reported.

According to the organization, this is the fastest-growing segment of the retail sector at the moment, Luxury Daily reports.

As a result, spokesman Michael McNamara believes shops with an ecommerce facility could benefit from investing more heavily in online marketing.

"You are looking at really substantial numbers here - it's where the growth is and where your strategies and online dollars should be," he commented.

Mr McNamara said this is likely to be the case for the "next few years" at least.

He added that internet shopping outlets are particularly popular when the weather is inclement during the winter, as people are reluctant to head to physical stores in adverse conditions.

This comes after Internet Retailer's 2012 Complete Guide to E-Commerce Technology revealed online merchants are feeling positive about the future of the online shopping market.
