Residents in Sargent, Matagorda County, Texas, are to have their own post office following a campaign from county judges and commissioners.
Currently, Sargent residents share the same zip code as Bay City, resulting in further distances to pick up mail, but the new local post office is scheduled to open in the second week of September, reports the Bay City Tribune.
Authorities are now working to secure new zip code verification for Sargent to distinguish it from Bay City that is nearly 30 miles away.
George Deshotels, commissioner of precinct two, told the paper: "Sargent needs its own zip code because it's very confusing right now having a Bay City address and a Bay City zip code."
As well as the potential for postage confusion, Matagorda County emergency management coordinator Doug Matthes said having distinct zip codes could aid hurricane evacuations.
Zip code software is being use to help coordinate volunteers around the US, according to a report from the Boston Globe.
