Growth in the ever-expanding tablet market shows no sign of abating, meaning a change in landscape for online retailers.
According to the latest figures from the International Data Corporation, worldwide media tablet shipments rose 88.9 per cent in the second quarter of 2011.
This marks a 303.8 per cent year-on-year increase in global sales for tablet devices.
With BlackBerry manufacturer Research in Motion having entered the tablet market with its PlayBook and an increasing number of Android-powered devices now hitting the shelves, the IDC does not anticipate that this growth will slow.
"We expect shipment totals to continue to grow in the third and fourth quarter, as additional vendors introduce more price-competitive Android products into the market and Apple works to maintain its dominance in the category," explained Tom Mainelli, IDC research director for mobile connected devices.
Research from the IE Market Research Corporation suggests that mobile payment transactions to online retailers will experience a 30-fold increase by 2015.
