The United States Postal Service (USPS) continues to lead the way when it comes to green initiatives, it has been reported.
Writing for Fed Smith, Marilyn Loeser commends the efforts of the postal service to improve its green credentials through services such as its "read, respond, recycle" scheme.
This sees USPS providing recycling bins for individuals to dispose of mail once they have finished with it in an environmentally friendly way.
Sheila Gavazzi, a New York postmaster, told the news provider: "The fact the Postal Service is embracing recycling shows the community that a large government organization sees the value in protecting the earth and its resources."
"It sets a good example for everyone. Our sights should all be in the same direction for future generations."
Customers can also contribute to the green effort by using measures such as online address verification
to check addresses before sending to ensure returned mail is kept to a minimum.
Individuals can find out more about their local "read, respond, recycle" Post Offices schemes by logging onto the USPS website and searching by ZIP Code.
