The United States Postal Service (USPS) has announced that it will be releasing a special-edition commemorative stamp to celebrate the life and work of Katharine Hepburn.

USPS states that the item forms part of its 'Legends of Hollywood' series and will be available for a short period of time.

Over the course of her almost 50-year career, Hepburn made in excess of 40 films and became an icon for independent women.

"We continue our proud tradition of honoring the special people who epitomize our nation's character and aspirations," said postmaster general John Potter.

"Katharine Hepburn will be remembered for generations, for both her unparalleled acting ability and being a role model for women who chose to live life on their own terms."

US citizens wanting to collect the stamp will need to send off to their local post office, ensuring that they put their address data on a stamped envelope.

Other products released by USPS include its social awareness stamps and its Flags of Our Nations series of collectible stamps.
