Without collaboration, there can be no data quality

If a company wants to enact an enterprise-wide change on any issue, it needs to get all leaders, managers and employees on board and active in adjusting their practices to achieve that goal. The same goes for data quality.

Roger du Mars, a contributor to Search Data Management, explains that there is less room for errors on data accuracy now, as so many of our business processes occur online and through automated systems.

Du Mars comments that because organizations are increasingly turning to business intelligence and analytics applications when they need to make decisions, "an effective data quality process that starts with the business users who enter data into transaction systems is a must."

To avoid the kinds of expenses that can occur because of bad data, such as the Port of Seattle cable trench that cost an additional $1 million because it was 2/100ths of an inch too narrow, businesses need to make sure everyone in their organizations is invested in maintaining data quality, he says. 

"Everybody in an organization needs to be aware that they influence data quality, and they should do their utmost to contribute to positive data quality efforts," Ted Friedman, an analyst at Gartner, told du Mars.
