National Land and Property Gazetteer (NLPG)

What is the National Land and Property Gazetteer (NLPG)?

The National Land and Property Gazetteer (NLPG) is a single definitive and consistent address infrastructure that is linked to national reference number for each property unit. It is made up of the Local Land and Property Gazetteers (LLPG) which comes from the local authorities across the UK and acts as a central hub for all this information.

This enables the unambiguous identification of land and property. The local authorities in England and Wales updated this source on a continual basis and the NLPG now contains over 300 million records.

The NLPG is managed by the company Intelligent Addressing on behalf of the Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA) - an umbrella government organisation coordinating and promoting local authority good practice.

What is the purpose of the National Land and Property Gazetteer?

The purpose of the NLPG is to create a 'single, unique source of address data’ linked to consistent national reference number for each property unit. Local Councils have responsibilities for:

  • Planning
  • Building control
  • Street naming.

The information NLPG collects provides insight into any changes to property or land. After a government initiative meant that local councils were responsible for creating a modern unified and single database, the NLPG helped to maintain this unified process to continue coordinating an aligned approach.
